Greater Shady Grove Civic Alliance
Meeting: Wednesday April 22,
2009 8:00pm
Mill Creek Towne Elementary School,
17700 Park Mill Drive, in the All Purpose Room
Topic: Walking or Bicycling to
Metro
The April meeting of the Greater Shady Grove Civic Alliance will
feature a County spokesperson who will address the issue of
pedestrian and bicycle access to the Shady Grove Metro. There
will be a presentation on the future plans Montgomery County has to
enable the residents of the Derwood community to have walking and
bicycle access to the Metro Station.
Metro access is an important asset to those living in this
community. It is a key factor in making Derwood a desirable place
to live. People are attracted to the community because of its
close proximity to Metro, adding to the appeal of Derwood.
Currently, none of the Derwood Communities have safe and easy
pedestrian or bicycle access to Metro. Even though many homes are
within walking or bicycling distance, there are no safe sidewalks or
bicycle paths to get to Metro. In addition, steep slopes, fencing
or dangerous roadways create barriers or block access to the Metro
Station. This diminishes the advantage of living near Metro.
It is important for the community to stay involved in all decisions
surrounding the development planned for the Shady Grove Metro and to
ensure that those who have been living in the community for many years
be considered in the infrastructure and amenities planned for the new
development which will take place around Shady Grove
Metro.
